Landscape Lighting
What does landscape lighting cost?
It depends on the size of your property, how many fixtures you need, the fixture quality and how far wire has to run. A front-of-house package with a handful of uplights and path lights costs far less than a whole-property design with trees, patios and the backyard. The fastest way to get a real number is a free estimate. Send us a photo and we'll send back a few design options with pricing.
Does landscape lighting add value to a house?
Good landscape lighting boosts curb appeal, makes the home look finished and high-end at night, and adds safety and security around walkways, steps and entries. Buyers notice a well-lit home in evening showings and listing photos, and you get to enjoy the look every night you live there.
Is landscape lighting worth it?
For most homeowners, yes. You get a home that looks great after dark, safer steps and walkways, better security and more use out of your patio and yard in the evening. Modern LED systems use very little electricity, so the main cost is the up-front install.
What is the best way to light the front of a house?
Layer the light. Wash the face of the house with soft uplights between windows, highlight one or two focal points like a tree or entry, and add path or step lights where people walk. Warm white light (around 2700K–3000K) makes brick, stone and siding look rich instead of harsh.
What is the rule of thumb for outdoor lighting?
Light the features, not the whole yard. Aim for contrast and soft pools of light rather than making everything bright. Hide the light source so you see the glow, not the bulb, keep glare out of windows and neighbors' eyes, and stick to one warm color temperature across the property.
How do you plan a landscape lighting layout?
Start by walking the property at night and picking the focal points: the house facade, key trees, entries, walkways and outdoor living areas. Then decide the technique for each (uplighting, downlighting, path lighting, wall washing), place the fixtures, and size the transformer and wire runs to match. We do all of this for you and send a design before anything is installed.
What are the trends for outdoor lighting in 2026?
Warm-white LED landscape lighting, app and timer control, permanent color-changing roofline lighting that works for holidays and every day, dark-sky-friendly fixtures that keep light pointed where it's needed, and lighting outdoor living spaces like patios, kitchens and fire pits.
What are common problems with landscape lighting?
The usual issues are corroded or loose wire connections, wires cut by shovels or aerators, fixtures knocked over by mowers or snow, plants growing over lights, and voltage drop on long runs that leaves the far lights dim. Professionally installed systems with sealed connections and properly sized wire avoid most of these.
Low-Voltage Lighting
What is low-voltage landscape lighting?
It's an outdoor lighting system that runs on 12 volts instead of standard 120-volt household power. A transformer plugs into an outdoor outlet and steps the power down, and low-voltage wire runs to each fixture. It's safer to work around, uses very little energy with LED fixtures, and is the standard for professional landscape lighting.
Where do you plug in low-voltage landscape lighting?
The transformer plugs into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet with a weatherproof in-use cover, usually on the side of the house or garage. If there's no outlet where it's needed, an electrician can add one.
How far can you run low-voltage landscape lights?
It depends on the wire gauge, the total wattage on the run and the transformer. The longer the run and the more lights on it, the more voltage drops, which makes far fixtures dimmer. Heavier wire, LED fixtures and running wire in a hub or loop layout let you go much farther. We size every run so the lights at the end look as bright as the first one.
How long do low-voltage LED landscape lights last?
Quality LED landscape fixtures are rated for tens of thousands of hours, which at a few hours a night can mean many years before the LEDs need attention. Solid brass or copper fixtures hold up to weather far longer than cheap aluminum or plastic ones.
What is the best low-voltage landscape lighting?
Look for professional-grade fixtures made of solid brass, copper or heavy cast aluminum, warm-white LEDs, sealed wire connections and a quality stainless-steel transformer with a timer or photocell. Big-box kits are cheaper up front but tend to fade, corrode and fail much sooner.
Christmas Light Installation
How much does it cost to have someone put up Christmas lights?
Professional Christmas light installation is usually priced by the size of the job: how many feet of roofline, how high the house is, and whether you want trees, bushes, wreaths or garland added. Most quotes also cover the lights, takedown after the season and service calls if something goes out. Send us a photo of your house for a free quote.
How do Christmas light installers charge?
Most installers price by the linear foot of roofline plus extras like trees, shrubs and wreaths, with the lights, installation and takedown bundled into one price. Your quote from us spells out exactly what's included.
How do professionals install Christmas lights?
Pros measure the house, cut commercial-grade light strands to length, and attach them with clips to gutters and shingles so there are no nails, staples or damage to your roof. Lights are plugged into outdoor GFCI outlets on timers, and everything comes down cleanly after the season.
When should I book Christmas light installation?
Book as early as you can. Fall is the busiest time of year for holiday lighting crews in Western New York, and the best install dates fill up fast once the weather turns cold. Booking early also means your lights are up and working before Thanksgiving.
Permanent Holiday Lighting
What are permanent Christmas lights?
Permanent lighting is a low-profile track of LED lights installed along your roofline or soffit that stays up year-round. You control it from a phone app to show warm white every night, colors for Christmas, Halloween, July 4th and Bills games, or schedules and animations. No ladders every November.
Are permanent Christmas lights worth the cost?
If you'd otherwise pay for Christmas light installation every year, or you want lighting for more than one holiday, permanent lights often make sense. You pay once instead of every season, skip the ladder work, and get everyday accent lighting and security lighting too.
What are the downsides of permanent lights?
The up-front cost is higher than one season of traditional lights, and the track is permanently attached to the house. A good install uses a track color-matched to your trim so it's barely visible during the day. Make sure the system has quality, weather-rated components and an app that's easy to use.
How many years do permanent Christmas lights last?
Quality permanent LED systems are built to stay up year-round for many years. Lifespan depends on the quality of the LEDs, the housing and the controller, and how they're installed. Ask any installer what warranty comes with the system.
Permanent lights vs. traditional Christmas lights: which is better?
Traditional lights are a lower cost for one season and give the classic big-bulb look. Permanent lights cost more up front but stay up all year, work for every holiday and everyday accent lighting, and never need to be hung again. Many homeowners start with one and switch later. We install both.
Outdoor Lighting in Buffalo Winters
Can you leave outdoor lights up in the winter?
Yes. Professional landscape lighting and permanent lighting are built to stay out year-round, through snow, ice and freezing temperatures.
Do LED lights work in freezing temperatures?
Yes. LEDs actually run more efficiently in the cold. Unlike some older bulb types, they turn on at full brightness in sub-zero weather.
What color lights look best in snow?
Warm white (around 2700K–3000K) glows beautifully off fresh snow and makes a house look cozy. Cooler, bluish whites can look harsh and icy. With permanent color lighting you can switch to any color you like.
What happens to landscape lights after a big snowstorm?
Uplights and in-ground lights keep working under snow, and the glow through the snow can look great. Short path lights may get buried or bumped by snowblowers and plows, so we place fixtures with Western New York winters in mind and can repair any that get knocked over.
